Prune by the calendar, not by the clock

Azaleas form next spring’s flower buds over the summer. Cut them in autumn and you remove the bloom before it ever opens, so they get shaped just after flowering finishes in spring. Gardenias work the same way. Hibiscus and ixora flower on fresh growth and are fine to trim through the warm season.

In Central Florida’s long growing season, screening hedges keep pushing out new growth for most of the year. Plan on a shaping every six to eight weeks from spring through fall to keep them dense.

Wide at the base, narrow at the top

A hedge trimmed so the bottom is a little wider than the top lets sunlight reach the lower leaves, and it stays green right down to the soil. Square it off, or let the top get wider, and the base shades itself out and goes leggy over a couple of seasons. That slight taper is how we shape every hedge.

On a schedule or as a one-off

Trimming can be folded into your mowing visit every few weeks, or booked once or twice a year as its own job. Either way the clippings are bagged and removed from the property.
