What comes off, what stays on

• Brown frondsDead and drooping fronds cut close to the trunk.

No “hurricane cut” on our watch

Around Lake County you’ll see palms stripped to a handful of upright fronds. According to UF/IFAS, that kind of over-pruning weakens the palm, slows its growth and gives no extra protection in high wind. A full crown is what keeps it strong.

A simple guide: nothing above the 9-to-3 o’clock line comes off. Only fronds that are dead or hanging below horizontal are removed.

How often

Once a year covers most palms, ideally before hurricane season so dead fronds aren’t loose when the first strong storm comes through. Queen palms shed fronds and fruit more often and may need a second trim.
