Leaf season here runs backwards

Northern trees drop in the fall. Live oaks keep last year’s leaves through winter and let them go as the new growth pushes out, mostly from late February into April; laurel oaks shed over a longer window. On the oak-lined streets around downtown Eustis, that means the heaviest raking arrives right when the grass comes out of dormancy.

What a leaf mat does to the lawn

Damp oak leaves lying on St. Augustine block the sun at the very moment the grass is trying to green up. Leave them a couple of weeks and the turf beneath comes through pale and patchy. Clearing every week or two during the drop keeps the lawn on track for summer.
